Softball splits with Harrisburg

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team split an United East doubleheader with Penn State Harrisburg on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. Berks won the opener 7-6, but dropped the next game by a 12-6 margin.

Berks moves to 24-9 overall and 21-5 in the United East, while Penn State Harrisburg is now 25-11 on the season and 21-5 in the conference.

In the opener, Harrisburg jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first, but Berks responded with four runs in the second. Harrisburg plated one run in each of the next three innings to even the score at 4-all in the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Arizona Shreck smacked a three-run homer to retake the lead at 7-4. Harrisburg scored a pair of runs and had two on with two out before Briana Smith got a groundout to short to end the game.

Shreck finished 3-for-4 with a homer, four RBI, and a run scored, while Peyton Vivian went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Susan Duncan (two runs, RBI), Veronica Maryanski, and Briana Smith (run) all had a pair of hits. Naomi Fay and Savannah Wilson both had a hit and scored a run.

Briana Smith earned her 14th win of the season after allowing six runs (four earned), while striking out four in a complete-game effort.

In game two, Harrisburg plated five runs in the top of the second, but Berks responded with three in the bottom of the third to make it 5-3 in favor of the visitors. Harrisburg then scored six in sixth and one in the seventh. Berks added one in the sixth and scored twice in the seventh to make it 12-6.

Erin Spatz had two hits, one double, and two RBI, while Hayden Perrone was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. Maryanski and Fay (RBI) both had two hits, Emily Strupp had a double, two RBI, and a run scored.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn College in an United East doubleheader on Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m. Prior to the start of the game, Erin Spatz will be honored with Senior Day recognition.
