ABINGTON, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team split with Penn State Abington in an United East doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Berks won the opener, 7-1, in nine innings, while Abington held on for a 10-7 victory in the second game.

Berks is now 23-8 overall and 20-4 in the United East, while Abington now sits at 20-12 on the season and 15-7 in the conference action.

In the opener, following a brief rain delay in the middle innings, the two teams were locked in a scoreless tie after seven innings.

Hayden Perrone was placed on second base and Savannah Wilson bunted her over to third. After a fly out to right, Arizona Shreck singled to center to bring in Perrone for a 1-0 lead. Abington quickly tied it up with a leadoff double that scored the runner placed on second for the tiebreak. After a sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third, Abington had the winning run 60 feet away with only one out on the board. Peyton Vivian fielded a ball at third and threw home to Emily Smith to get the runner and Briana Smith struck out the next batter to end the threat.

Vivian started on second base and Naomi Fay had a one-out bunt single to put two runners on. Briana Smith singled to right field to score Vivian. Emily Smith reached on an error by the center fielder to load the bases and Veronica Maryanski followed with a pinch hit single to score Fay. Susan Duncan smacked a two-out bases clearing triple to plate three runs and make it a 6-1 score. Shreck followed with a hit to right field to bring in Duncan for another run.

Briana Smith tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up her 13th win of the season. Smith finished with six hits and one run (unearned), while striking out nine.

Shreck was 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Duncan finished 1-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Vivian added two hits and scored a run, while Fay, Smith, and Maryanski all had a hit and scored a run.

Berks led 5-1 after two innings in game two, but an eight run bottom of the third gave the home squad a 10-5 advantage. Berks chipped away with two runs in the top of the sixth, but that is as close as they would get the rest of the way.

Vivian was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Duncan went 2-for-4 with a double, triple, RBI, and three runs scored. Shreck finished 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored. Emily Strupp had a triple and drove in a run, Perrone had a triple and scored a run. Erin Spatz added an RBI single in the first inning.

Shreck allowed 10 runs (six earned) while matching a career-high seven strikeouts.

Berks will host Penn State Harrisburg in an United East doubleheader on Friday, April 29 at 3 p.m.
