Softball sweeps LBC on the road

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team defeated Lancaster Bible College by scores of 7-0 and 5-1 to earn an United East doubleheader sweep on the road Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 22-7 overall and 19-3 in the United East, while the Chargers dropped to 11-23 on the season and 9-15 in the conference.

In the opener, Berks tallied three runs in the third, one in the fifth, and three more in the seventh for all of the scoring in the game.

Briana Smith was brilliant as usually in the pitcher's circle. The junior right hander set down the first nine batters in order and only allowed three bases runners in scoring position for the entire game. Smith finished with nine strikeouts in a four-hit complete, game shutout to pick up her 12th win of the season.

Peyton Vivian was 3-for-4 with a double, and four RBI, while Savannah Wilson was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and Briana Smith added a pair of hits. Arizona Shreck had a hit, RBI, and three runs scored, Susan Duncan and Emily Smith each had a hit and scored a run.

Emily Spatz, Emily Smith, and Wilson all had RBI singles in the fourth to give Berks a 3-0 lead, but the Chargers got one back in the bottom half to cut the deficit to two runs. Spatz added an RBI double in the sixth and Vivian drove in a run in the seventh to finish off the scoring.

Shreck worked out of a couple of jams throughout the game to earn her 10th win of the season. The sophomore left hander allowed six hits and one run, while striking out five batters. Briana Smith came on to finish off the game, she struck out two and forced a pop to close out the game.

Spatz was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, Emily Smith added a pair of hits. Emily Strupp went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, Shreck and Naomi Fay each had a hit and scored a run. Wilson and Vivian each had a hit and drove in a run.

Berks will travel to Penn State Abington for an United East doubleheader on Tuesday, April 26 at 3 p.m.
