Softball picks up two wins at Gallaudet

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Penn State Berks softball team earned a sweep over Gallaudet University in an United East doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Nittany Lions won 21-1 in the opener and followed with an 11-1 victory in the second game.

The Nittany Lions improved to 20-7 on the season and 17-3 in United East play, while Gallaudet dropped to 3-29 overall and 3-19 in the conference.

In the opener, Berks went down in order in the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, Kaci Ketchum hit a two-out triple and scored on a single up the middle by Caitlyn Smith for an early 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived, as Berks plated eight runs in the second inning and did not look back from there.

Susan Duncan went 3-for-4 with two home runs, nine RBI, and two runs scored, while Hayden Perrone finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and four runs scored. Briana Smith was 4-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Emily Smith and Savannah Wilson (triple, two RBI) both had two hits and scored three runs. Arizona Shreck, Peyton Vivian, and Emily Strupp all had two hits and scored twice.

Briana Smith allowed three hits and one run, while striking out nine to improve to 11-3 on the season.

In game two, Berks led 4-1 after two innings, but they broke things open with a combined seven runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

Perrone stayed perfect on the day, going 2-for-2 with a double, two stolen bases, and two runs scored. Strupp was 3-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored, while Vivian had a hit and drove in three runs. Duncan, Shreck, and Wilson all had a hit and scored two runs.

Shreck earned her ninth win of the season after allowing three hits and one run, while striking out one.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for an United East contest on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
