Softball splits with Penn College on the road

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team split with Penn College in an United East doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions took the opener, 1-0, before falling by a score of 10-2 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Briana Smith tossed a complete-game, shutout gem to earn the win in the pitcher's circle. The senior right-hander scattered four hits, while striking out nine in 7.0 innings of work. She faced just three batters in four innings and only allowed one runner to make it as far as second base.

Peyton Vivian led off the top of the sixth with a double and advanced to third on a groundout by Emily Strupp. Emily Smith then delivered a fly out to center field that was deep enough for Vivian to tag up and score the lone run of the game.

Susan Duncan was 3-for-4, while Vivian, Naomi Fay, and Savannah Wilson each recorded a hit.

In the second game, Berks scored in the top of the first but it was all Wildcats after that.

Duncan was 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run scored, while Strupp (RBI), Emily Smith, and Fay (run scored) all had a hit.

Berks will host Penn State Abington in an United East doubleheader on Tuesday, April 5 at 3 p.m.
