Softball splits with Penn State Harrisburg on the road

MIDDLETOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team played to a split with Penn State Harrisburg in an United East doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Harrisburg rallied late for a 6-5 win in game one, while Berks won 13-5 in five innings due to the mercy rule in the second game of the twinbill.

Berks is now 18-7 on the season and 15-3 in the United East, while Harrisburg moves to 19-9 overall and 13-3 in league play.

In the opener, Berks scored a run in the top of the first, but Harrisburg knotted it at 1-all in the bottom of the third. Berks responded with four runs in the fourth behind a bases clearing double by Savannah Wilson. The home squad chipped away at its four-run deficit with a pair of runs in the sixth and then won in walk-off fashion with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Arizona Shreck was 3-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored, while Susan Duncan and Veronica Maryanski each collected two hits. Wilson finished 1-for-3 and her triple scored Emily Smith, Briana Smith, and Naomi Fay.

Briana Smith allowed six runs and struck out 11 in 6.0 innings in the circle.

Game two started off in similar fashion with Berks scoring in the top of the first and Harrisburg quickly tying it up, this time they responded in the bottom half of the inning. In the second, Harrisburg plated three runs to build a 4-1 lead. Berks bounced back with eight runs in the top of the third, before Harrisburg got one back in the fourth to make it a 9-5 score. Berks pushed across four runs in the fifth and held the home team off the board in the bottom to end the contest.

Shreck allowed 10 hits and five runs (one earned) while striking out one in 5.0 innings to earn the win.

Berks had at least one hit from eight players and five recorded two hits. Peyton Vivian was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, Duncan (RBI) and Hayden Perrone (double) each were 2-for-3 with three runs scored. Shreck was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and a run scored, Wilson added two hits, a stolen base, RBI, and a run scored. Emily Smith was 1-for-4 with a double, three RBI, and a run scored, while Naomi Fay and Erin Spatz both had a hit and scored a run.

The Nittany Lions will continue on the road for a pair of United East doubleheaders this weekend. They will face Gallaudet University on Friday, Aprill 22 at 3 p.m., followed by two games with Lancaster Bible College on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
