Ference picks up 200th win in sweep of Wells

AURORA, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Wells College in United East action on Saturday afternoon.

With the win in game one, head coach Donna Ference earned the 200th win of her career. Ference, who is the winningest coach in program history, currently has a career record of 201-75-1, which is 89 wins more than the next closest coach.

In game one, Susan Duncan was 4-for-5 with a double, three home runs, three RBI, and four runs scored, while Arizona Shreck and Peyton Vivian each had three hits and scored four runs. Veronica Maryanski finished 3-for-3 with two doubles, three RBI, and three runs scored, Naomi Fay also added three hits and drove in two. Emily Strupp finished 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI, three runs scored.

Briana Smith struck out 11 batters in a one-hit, complete-game shutout. The junior right-hander improved to 10-2 on the season and lowered her ERA to 1.00 with 92 strikeouts in 71.2 innings of work.

In game two, Shreck struck out seven in a one-hit, complete-game shutout.

At the plate, Shreck was 4-for-5 with two doubles, two triples, six RBI and four runs scored. Duncan went 5-for-6 with four doubles, four RBI, and three runs scored. Vivian was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, Strupp added two hits, two RBI, and three runs scored. Maryanski and Hayden Perrone both had a hit and scored three runs, while Fay had a triple and drove in four.

Berks will travel to Penn State Harrisburg for an United East doubleheader on Tuesday, April 19 at 3 p.m.
