Softball drops a pair of one-run games

CLERMONT, FLA - The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a pair of 2-1 setbacks on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Illinois College in walk-off fashion and coming up short later against Haverford College.

In the opener, Berks got on the board first with an RBI single by Peyton Vivian that scored Susan Duncan. In the bottom of the fourth, Illinois knotted the game at 1-all with an unearned run. With two outs and runners on first and second, catcher Grace Frost doubled to left center field to lift the Lady Blues to a 2-1 victory.

Vivian finished the contest 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Duncan and Arizona Shreck each recorded singles.

Briana Smith allowed 10 hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out five in 6.2 innings of work.

The second game played out in a similar manner with the Nittany Lions taking the first lead, this time in the fifth inning. Savannah Wilson dropped down a bunt in front of home plate and beat it out for single as the throw sailed wide of the first base bag. Wilson quickly took off and raced around the bases to score with ease as the Haverford defense tracked down the ball.

Haverford got a leadoff triple in the top of the seventh and evened the game at 1-1 two batters later. With two outs and a runner on second, Haverford's Carley Parsons poked a single to center to bring in the go ahead run. Berks went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to suffer another one-run setback.

Shreck went 2-for-4, while Emily Strupp, Vivien, Naomi Fay, and WIlson all had one hit.

Shreck allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out one in 7.0 innings of work.

The Nittany Lions wrap up their spring trip with a pair of early games on Wednesday, March 9. They open with Mitchell College at 9:30 a.m., followed by Messiah University at 11:30 a.m.
