Softball wins thriller over Swarthmore

CLERMONT, FLA. - The Penn State Berks softball team rallied late to force extra innings in a 3-2 win in nine innings against Swarthmore College on Sunday morning.

The Nittany Lions (3-0) had a couple of miscues in the bottom of the fourth inning which allowed Swarthmore to plate a pair of unearned runs. In the top of the sixth, Emily Strupp drew a one-out walk and came around to score on a triple down the right field line by Peyton Vivian. Briana Smith singled through the right side to score Vivian and tie the game at 2-all.

In the top of the ninth, Veronica Maryanski came around to score from second base when the throw to first was bobbled on Emily Smith's sacrifice bunt attempt. In the bottom of the ninth, Briana Smith got a foul fly out, strikeout, and a ground out to secure the victory.

Briana Smith allowed six hits and two unearned runs, while striking out four in a complete game victory.

Arizona Shreck went 2-for-5 with a double, while Hayden Perrone was 1-for-3.

The Nittany Lions second game of they day was canceled due to lack of umpires. Berks will return to action on Tuesday, March 8 against Illinois College (3 p.m.) and Haverford College (5:30 p.m.).
