Softball opens season with a pair of wins in Florida

LEESBURG, FLA - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up the 2022 season with a pair of wins at The Spring Games on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions opened up with a 5-1 victory over Plymouth State University, followed by a 12-0 win against Russell Sage College.

In the opener, Briana Smith picked up where she left off last season in the pitcher's circle and at the plate. The junior, right-hander allowed five hits and one run, while striking out six in a complete-game effort. Smith belted a bases clearing double in the third inning to put Berks ahead 4-1.

Freshman Emily Strupp made a strong collegiate debut, going 2-for-3 with a home run, two runs scored, and an RBI. Arizona Shreck turned in a 2-for-3 performance, with a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Susan Duncan recorded a double and a run scored, while Savannah Wilson finished 1-for-3.

In the second game, Berks plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, followed by five in the second inning to jump out to a commanding 7-0 lead. They added one more run in the third and capped it off with four in the fourth inning.

Shreck tossed a gem in the pitcher's circle, allowing only two hits, while picking up a shutout, victory. The Gators had only five baserunners all game and only one runner reached third base.

Duncan was 3-for-3 with three doubles, four runs scored, and two RBI, while Peyton Vivian was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Shreck finished 2-for-4 with a homer, two runs scored, and four runs batted in. Strupp, Veronica Maryanski, and Naomi Fay all recorded two hits and the trio combined for four RBI and three runs scored. Wilson went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base.

The Nittany Lions continue The Spring Games with a pair of contests on Sunday, March 6. They open with Swarthmore College at 9 a.m., followed by Heidelberg University at 11:15 a.m.
