Softball splits with Harrisburg in NEAC Semifinal

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team used one big inning to take the opener 5-2 over Penn State Harrisburg in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Semifinal on Sunday afternoon. In game two, Berks rallied late to force extra innings, but visiting Harrisburg was able to pull off an 8-7 victory in nine innings to force a decisive game three on Monday afternoon.

In the opener, Harrisburg scored an unearned run in the second and added another run in the fourth to build a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Veronica Maryanski singled to left to drive in Briana Smith, who led off the inning with a single. Hunter Hart drew a bases loaded walk to score Maggie Duncan, who singled in her at bat. Arizona Shreck followed with a bases clearing double that scored Maryanski, Wilson and Hart.

Briana Smith improved to 9-1 in the circle after allowing 10 hits and two runs (one earned), while striking out three batters.

Shreck was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Briana Smith, Maggie Duncan, Maryanski, and Wilson all had a hit and scored a run. Susan Duncan finished 1-for-4 with a double.

In game two, Bri Smith ripped a single to right center that Shreck was able to score from first on in the bottom of the first. The lead was short lived, as Harrisburg got a two-out, two-run single for a 2-1 lead in the top of the second. Berks evened the game at 2-all in the fourth when Maggie Duncan singled and later scored on a single by Susan Duncan. Harrisburg jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the fifth on a three-run home run by Maddie Krantz.

The score would remain that way until the bottom of the sixth when Wilson singled and Hart smacked a two-run homer to left center to make it 5-4. Bri Smith smoked a line drive off the the pitcher for a lead off single in the bottom of the seventh. Pinch runner Ashley Berry moved all the way to third when the ball was thrown away at first base on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Briana Smith. Emily Smith followed with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Berry with the tying run.

Harrisburg scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth, but Berks again came back. Hart hit a fly ball that was dropped by the right fielder to score Wilson and Hart scored from first on a double to right center by Shreck. In the ninth, Harrisburg pushed across a run with a sacrifice fly to deep left field to go up 8-7. In the bottom half, Berks moved up the runner starting on second with a sacrifice bunt, but could not get the runner in from third.

Shreck allowed 10 hits and seven runs (six earned), while striking out three in 7.2 innings of work. Briana Smith allowed one hit and one unearned run in 1.1 innings of relief.

Shreck finished the game 3-for-5 with a double, RBI, and a run scored, while Bri Smith was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Hart went 2-for-4 with a home run, three RBI, and two runs scored, Wilson was 2-for-4- with two runs scored. Susan Duncan finished 2-for-5 with an RBI.

The teams will play an elimination game on Monday, May 10 at 1 p.m. with the winner earning a spot in the NEAC Championship round next weekend.
