Softball falls in extras to Harrisburg

READING, PA - For the second straight game, the Penn State Berks softball team was edged by one run in extra innings by Penn State Harrisburg. Today's setback was a 5-4 loss in eight innings, which eliminated Berks and sent Harrisburg to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championship round next weekend.

After two quick outs to open the game, Harrisburg rattled off thee consecutive hits that was capped off with a three-run home run by Steph Reider. The score remained that way until the bottom of the third when Berks finally got something going on offense. Veronica Maryanski reached on a throwing error, Savannah Wilson doubled to right center, and Susan Duncan walked to load up the bases with no outs. Hunter Hart reached first on a fielder's choice as Harrisburg got Maryanski at home with a force for the first out. Arizona Shreck narrowly missed a grand slam as her line drive hit off the middle of the center field fence for a double that scored Wilson and Duncan. Bri Smith followed with a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt that allowed Hart to score from third.

In the top of the fourth, Harrisburg had runners on second and third with just one out. After a pitch went high in the strike zone, Bri Smith fired a ball to third base to pick off the runner for out number two. The following batter walked, before Briana Smith got a fly out to center to escape the inning. Emily Smith doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth, but was left stranded.

Harrisburg had runners on second and third with just one out again in the top of the fifth. But Briana Smith got a foul fly to left and strikeout looking to leave two in scoring position. Neither team was able to create much of a scoring threat over the final three innings.

In extras, Krys Moore led off with a double to score the runner that was placed on second for the tiebreak. Mary Kate Penczkowski later singled through the left side of the infield to make it a 5-3 game in Harrisburg's favor. Shreck lead off the bottom half of the inning with a line drive single to right center to easily score Hart from second base. Emily Smith singled up the middle with two outs to put runners on second and third. Penczkowski forced a pop up to the catcher that was dropped, but had enough to recover and throw to first to get the out and end the ballgame.

Shreck finished 2-for-2 with three RBI, a walk, and was hit by pitch, while Emily Smith was 2-for-4 with a double. Hart went 1-for-4 with a double and two runs scored, Wilson was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Maggie Duncan went 1-for-4, while Susan Duncan drew two walks and scored a run.

Briana Smith allowed five runs (four earned), while striking out two in 8.0 innings of work.

The Nittany Lions finish the year 17-4 overall, after going 16-2 in the NEAC. The team will part with seniors Hunter Hart and Ashley Berry. With strong core of returning players mixed in with the freshmen and transfers, head coach Donna Ference and the Nittany Lions will look to compete for a return trip to the NCAA Tournament.
