Softball splits with Penn College on the road

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks softball defeated Penn College, 5-2, in the opener, but the Wildcats took the second game, 3-1, as the teams split a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Elm Park.

The Nittany Lions move to 16-2 on the season, while Penn College is now 12-2.

In the opener, Susan Duncan doubled to open the game and scored on a single by Hunter Hart. Later in the inning, Hart scored off a single to right center by Briana Smith for an early 2-0 lead. The Wildcats were able to even up the game with a two-out double that plated two runners in the bottom of the first.

Emily Smith walked in the fourth, followed by one out singles by Veronica Maryanski and Savannah Wilson to load the bases. Duncan delivered a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Smith, giving Berks a 3-2 edge. The Nittany Lions tacked on two more runs in the top of the fifth when Maryanski singled to right field to bring in Briana Smith and Emily Smith.

Briana Smith improved to 8-1 in the pitcher's circle after allowing eight hits and two runs, while striking out three in a complete-game effort.

Duncan started game two with a double to left field and scored on a single up the middle by Hart for a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. The Wildcats broke through for a run in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on two more in the fifth.

Arizona Shreck allowed six hits and two runs, while striking out two in 4.1 innings of work. Peyton Morrell tossed one scoreless inning of relief.

Duncan, Hart, Emily Smith, and Wilson all recorded hits in the game.

The Nittany Lions wrapped up the regular season and will host a NEAC Postseason game next weekend. Date, time, and opponent to be determined later in this week. Please check back at the athletics website for more information.
