Softball splits a pair of one-run games with Penn College

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team had a hard fought split with Penn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats scored the lone run of the game with a run in the sixth inning of a 1-0 win in game one. Berks bounced back and managed the split with a thrilling 2-1 victory in game two.

In the opener, Briana Smith threw brilliantly in the pitcher's circle. The sophomore right-hander allowed just five hits and one unearned run, while striking out 10 batters. Briana Smith worked out of a bases loaded, no outs jam in the top of the fifth inning. Penn College had three straight singles to load up the bases. But Briana Smith made a great play and glove flip to home to get the force for out one. She then got a strikeout and a ground out to short to keep the game in a scoreless tie.

In the top of the sixth, Ivvy Morder double down the right field line and scored when the throw to second went high and rolled out of play.

Briana Smith reached first on an error and advanced to second a single up the middle by Savannah Wilson. Veronica Maryanski had a productive out to second that moved both of the runners up a base. Hunter Hart poked the ball to right field, but the Wildcat defender was able to track it down for the final out of the game. Wildcats pitcher Kyla Benner allowed five hits and struck out three in a complete-game shutout.

Susan Duncan finished 2-for-3 with a double, while Arizona Shreck was 1-for-2 with a double. Bri Smith and Wilson each had singles for Berks.

The second game was also a pitcher's duel with Shreck going against Kassidy Svenson from the Wildcats. Shreck surrendered five hits and one run, while striking out three in 6.1 innings to pick up the win. Briana Smith recorded the final two outs of the game to earn the save. Svenson allowed six hits and two runs in 5.1 innings.

In the bottom of the third, Savannah Wilson led off with a single to center and moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Maryanski. Duncan followed with a double over the center fielder's head to easily score Wilson and give Berks the 1-0 lead.

The Wildcats loaded the bases with a single and a pair of walks in the top of the fourth. Shreck got a line out to center field that was snagged by Duncan, who fired home thinking the runner on third was tagging. The runner on third stayed, but the runner on second left on contact and Emily Smith was able to double her off with a throw to second. Berks nearly got out of the inning unscathed, but Lesley Fritz singled down the left field line to even the score at 1-all.

The scored would stay deadlocked at 1 until the bottom of the sixth inning. Bri Smith singled up the middle and Maggie Duncan came in to pinch run. Shreck moved Maggie Duncan up with a sacrifice bunt, followed by Emily Smith getting hit by a pitch. Erin Spatz worked a walk to load the bases and the Wildcats went to Benner in relief. On the third pitch of the at bat to Ashley Berry, the ball got away from the catcher and Maggie Duncan raced home to give the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead. Berry eventually walked to load the bases back up, but Benner got a strikeout and ground out to work out of the jam.

In the top of the seventh, Shreck forced a pop up in foul ground on the first base side. Spatz came flying in and made a spectacular diving catch to record the first out of the inning. Briana Smith then came in on relief and gave up a bunt single, but struck out the next batter looking. Briana Smith then forced a pop up that just barely hit the back stop and fell into the glove of Shreck for the final out of the game.

The Nittany Lions will host Wells College in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 10 at 1 p.m.
