Baseball falls on the road to Wells

AURORA,N.Y. - The Penn State Berks baseball team battled all day, but were on the wrong end of a 6-3 and 9-3 decision to Wells College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.

In both games, it was one bad inning that doomed the Nittany Lions. In the opener, it was a five-run third inning that propelled the Express to the win. In the nightcap, Wells used a six-run sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie. Three errors and a couple hit batters doomed the Nittany Lions in that inning.

In game one, Joe Gramignano got hit by a pitch to lead off the game and Pat Maloney scored him with a double for an early 1-0 lead. After two quick outs in the third, Bryce Stout singled and came around to score on a double by Nate Trovinger to go ahead 2-1. Rich Mueller roped an RBI double in the sixth to score Eric Gale, who reached on an error.

Alex Laudenslager recorded three strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work. Chad Evans allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings of relief.

Wells jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two innings in the second game, but Berks battled the top of the third. Josh Miiller drew a walk and Gramignano singled to put runners on first and second. The two came around to score on a single by Stout to left field. Trovinger delivered a single to score Stout and even the game at 3-all.

The score remained that way until the Express had their big inning in the sixth. Gramignano had a one-out double in the seventh, but was left stranded on the bases. Jay Pettit doubled to lead off the ninth and Evans was hit with a pitch in the ninth, but Berks couldn't get them in.

Miiller allowed seven his and three runs, while striking out three batters in five innings. Justin Renninger pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Penn College for a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 10 at 12 p.m.
