Softball opens up season with pair of one-hit, shutout wins

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball teams 2021 season was worth the extended wait as they opened up the new campaign with a pair of one-hit, shutout victories over visiting Morrisville State. The Nittany Lions, who last played at Hintz Athletic Field exactly 700 days ago, won by a score of 16-0 in the opener and took game two by an 8-0 count.

Briana Smith started in the circle in game one, allowed only three runners to reach base. She walked the leadoff batter of the game, who then moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt, but was left stranded. Briana Smith walked the leadoff batter in the second inning, but catcher Arizona Shreck caught the runner trying to steal second. The last base runner for the Mustangs was their lone hit of the game with one out in the fourth inning. Briana Smith finished with nine strikeouts in a complete-game, shutout to earn her first collegiate victory.

At the plate, Briana Smith helped herself by going 3-for-3 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Bri Smith also went 3-for-3 to go along with two double and five RBI. Emily Smith rounded out the strong contributions by those with the surname Smith by going 1-for-3 with two runs batted in.

Susan Duncan had a multi-hit day, going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Shreck finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Hunter Hart was 1-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI, while Savannah Wilson and Veronica Maryanski were both 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Shreck allowed a bunt single to the leadoff batter of the game before setting down the next 12 batters she faced. The freshman, left-hander allowed one hit and struck out four batters in 4.0 scoreless innings to win her first collegiate game. Peyton Morrell allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out two in a scoreless inning of relief.

Duncan stayed hot at the plate in the nightcap, finishing 3-for-3 with a double, triple, two RBI, and two runs scored. Emily Smith was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Bri Smith was 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and a run scored. Shreck recorded a pair of hits, including a double, while also recording a run scored. Hart tallied one hit and scored twice, while Wilson went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Maryanski had one hit and drove in a run, Erin Spatz walked and scored once. Ashley Berry, who went 1-for-2, had an outfield assist throwing out a baserunner at first that poked the ball through the right side of the field.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn College in a NEAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 7 at 1 p.m.
