Softball sweeps Abington on Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team won 8-1 and 10-2 to earn a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader sweep of Penn State Abington on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the first game, the Nittany Lions recognized Ashley Berry and Hunter Hart with Senior Day honors. Following the pregame celebration, the duo and their teammates had lots to cheer about throughout the afternoon.

In the opener, Susan Duncan singled up the middle and moved up third on a double to center by Hart. Arizona Shreck later drove in Duncan with a sacrifice fly to left field. In the third, Duncan doubled to left center and scored on a single by Hart to give Berks a 2-0 lead. Abington got a run in the top of the fourth, but the Berks offense went to work in the bottom half of the inning. Veronica Maryanski singled to left and eventually came around to score on a single by Duncan. Hart drove in Duncan with a triple to right field and came in to score on a sacrifice bunt by Bri Smith. With the bases cleared, Shreck doubled to left center and scored on a single by Briana Smith to give the Nittany Lions a 6-1 lead. In the fifth, Hart roped her second triple of the game, which scored Maryanski and Savannah Wilson to put Berks up by its winning margin.

Briana Smith improved to 7-1 on the season after allowing six hits and one run, while striking out 10 batters. Abington was able to get runners into scoring position in each of the first three innings, but Smith was able to leave them stranded each time. The sophomore right-hander did not allow a hit over the final 3.2 innings of the game.

Hart finished 4-for-4 with a double, two triples, four RBI, and a run scored. Those totals matched her single-game career highs for hits, triples, and RBI. Duncan went 3-for-4 a double, one RBI, and a three runs scored, while Maryanski was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Shreck recorded two doubles, an RBI, and a run scored. Briana Smith, Emily Smith, and Berry all recorded hits.

In game two, Abington plated two runs in the top of the first to jump out in the early going, but the lead quickly evaporated in the bottom half of the inning. Duncan reached on a throwing error and Hart launched a two-run shot to left, for her second homer of the season. Shreck followed with a walk and scored all the way from first a single to center field by Bri Smith. Berks added to its lead in the second when Shreck drove in Wilson with an RBI single. Bri Smith then laced a three-run homer to left field to score Shreck and Hart, giving Berks a 7-2 lead. Duncan lined a double to right to score Wilson for another run in the third and a throwing error on a steal by Briana Smith allowed Shreck to score a run in the fourth. Clinging to a 9-2 lead, Berks reached the mercy rule in the sixth after Shreck singled, moved to second on a single by Bri Smith and scored on a single to left by Briana Smith.

Bri Smith finished 3-for-4 with a homer, four RBI, and a run scored, while Shreck was 3-for-3 with one RBI and four runs scored. Wilson added two hits, including a double, and scored twice, Hart was 1-for-3 with a homer, two RBI and two runs scored.

Shreck moved to 8-0 in the pitcher's circle after giving up seven hits and two runs, while striking out three. Much like the first game, Abington had plenty of base runners in the early going, but Shreck was able to limit the damage. In the top of the third, a pair of hits gave Abington runners on second and third with no outs. Shreck got a comebacker and got the out at first, Erin Spatz fired home and got the runner trying to score from third. Shreck then struck out the next batter to end the threat.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up the NEAC regular season with a doubleheader at Penn College on Saturday, May 1 at 3 p.m.
