Softball takes two from Lancaster Bible

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team earned a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader sweep over Lancaster Bible College on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions claimed the opener 11-3 in five innings, followed by a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.

The Chargers got on the board with one run in the top of the first, but a sacrifice fly by Bri Smith scored Susan Duncan and a throwing error on the play allowed Hunter Hart to score to put Berks up 2-1. In the bottom of the second, Susan Duncan doubled to left to score Veronica Maryanski and Maggie Duncan. Hart followed with a double to center to plate Savannah Wilson and Duncan. Smith recorded the teams third straight double, which scored Hart and brought the lead to 7-1. Over the next two inning, Maryanski collected two hits and drove in three runs, while a double by Maggie Duncan added another run. LBC pushed across two runs in the fifth, but it was not enough to stop the mercy rule from coming into effect.

Briana Smith improved to 6-1 overall after scattering five hits and three runs, while striking out six batters.

Maryanski led the offense, going 3-for-3 with three RBI, one run scored, and one stolen base. Susan Duncan, Hart, and Bri Smith all collected two hits and two RBI with Duncan and Hart also scoring twice. Maggie Duncan was 1-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.

In game two, Arizona Shreck had an RBI single to score Hart for 1-0 lead in the first. Emily Smith drew a bases loaded walk to score Hart in the third. LBC scored a run in the fourth and fifth to even the game at 2-all. In the bottom of the fifth, Shreck had an RBI triple and scored on an error to put Berks up by two. Susan Duncan drove in Wilson with an RBI triple in the sixth and came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Hart. In the top of the seventh, the Chargers scored a pair of runs, but could the rally came up short in a 6-4 setback.

Shreck improved to 7-0 in the circle after allowed six hits and two unearned runs, while striking out a season-high six batters. Peyton Morrell allowed one run and struck out one in 1.0 innings of relief.

Shreck finished 2-for-2 with a triple, two RBI, and a run scored, while Susan Duncan went 2-for-4 with a triple, RBI, and run scored. Hart added one hit, one RBI, and three runs scored, Wilson recorded a hit and a run scored.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in a NEAC doublheader on Sunday, April 25 at 1 p.m.
