Softball picks up a pair of shutouts over Abington

ABINGTON, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team had a pair of shutout wins over Penn State Abington in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Berks claimed the first one by a 3-0 score and followed it up with an 8-0 victory in five innings in the nightcap.

Berks has run its win streak up to nine straight as they improve to 11-1 overall and in the NEAC, while Abington drops to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference.

In the opener, Berks got on the board with a run in the top of the second thanks to a couple of miscues by the home team. Briana Smith reached by error to leadoff the inning and later scored on a grounder by Veronica Maryanski that the first baseman could not handle.

In the top of the third, Susan Duncan led off with a double, moved up to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Bri Smith. Later in the inning, Arizona Shreck tripled and was driven home on an RBI single by Briana Smith.

That was more than enough run support with the way Briana Smith was performing in the pitcher's circle. The sophomore right-hander allowed four hits and struck out 11 in a complete-game shutout win to improve to 5-1.

Game two was a pitchers' duel through the first three innings, before Berks put up three runs in the top of the fourth. Maryanski led off with a single and moved up to third on a one-out double by Duncan. Maryanski scored on a wild pitch and Duncan came in on a sacrifice fly by Bri Smith. Hunter Hart, who walked earlier in the inning, stole a base and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.

In the fifth inning, Emily Smith singled, Erin Spatz walked, and Maryanski was hit by a pitch to load up the bases. Savannah Wilson singled down the right field line to drive in two runs. Hart doubled to left field to tacked on two more runs. Hart scored on an RBI single by Bri Smith to give Berks its winning margin.

Arizona Shreck allowed two hits and struck out two in a shutout effort to earn the win. The freshman left-hander improved to 6-0 in the circle. Ashley Berry made a couple of great plays in right field in the fifth inning to help Shreck and Berks end the game through the mercy rule.

The Nittany Lions will host Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 24 at 1 p.m.
