Softball extends win streak to seven straight

LANCASTER, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team extended its winning streak to seven straight after defeating Lancaster Bible College, 5-1 and 10-2, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions improved to 9-1 on the season and in the conference, while the Chargers drop to 2-6 overall and in the NEAC.

The opening game remained in a scoreless tie through the first three innings. In the top of the fourth, Briana Smith doubled to left field to bring in Arizona Shreck, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning.

Maggie Duncan singled to leadoff the fifth and eventually reached third after an LBC miscue on a ball hit by Savannah Wilson. Susan Duncan followed with a double to center field to bring in Maggie Duncan and Wilson. Later in the inning, Shreck singled to right field to score Hunter Hart, who reached on an infield single. Emily Smith capped off the four-run inning with an infield single to bring in Bri Smith put the Nittany Lions ahead 5-0.

The Chargers used a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh to push a run across. They had runners on the corners, but Briana Smith got a line out to third base to finish off the game. Briana Smith improved to 4-1 on the season after allowing four hits and one run, while striking out seven in a complete-game effort.

Briana Smith (double) and Emily Smith each finished 2-for-3 with an RBI. Hart, Bri Smith, Shreck (RBI), and Maggie Duncan all recorded one hit and one run scored. Susan Duncan finished 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

In the second game, Berks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and tacked on two more runs in the second to go up 5-0 in the early going. LBC chipped away at the deficit and made it 5-2 after three, but the Nittany Lions would not allow them to get any closer. Berks extended the lead with one run in the fifth and then combined for four runs over the final two innings.

Shreck improved to 5-0 in the pitcher's circle after surrendering seven hits and two runs, while striking out one in 5.0 innings of work. Briana Smith tossed 1.0 perfect inning of relief and Peyton Morrell recorded a strikeout in 1.0 scoreless inning.

Erin Spatz led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Susan Duncan, Bri Smith, and Veronica Maryanski all collected two hits and an RBI. Briana Smith and Savannah Wilson each had a hit and scored a pair of runs. Emily Smith (double) and Hart had a hit, RBI, and run scored.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Penn State Abington for a NEAC doubleheader on Tuesday, April 20 at 3 p.m.
