Softball wins two on the road

MIDDLETOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team picked up a sweep on the road over Penn State Harrisburg in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Thursday afternoon. Berks took the opener by a score of 8-1 and then won game two, 11-2, in five innings.

Berks has now won five straight games to improve to 7-1 on the season and in conference play, while Harrisburg falls to 4-7-1 overall and 4-6 in the NEAC.

In the opener, Berks held a 2-0 lead through four innings before adding some breathing room with four runs in the top of the fifth. Harrisburg got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, but Berks tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh for the 8-1 final score.

Briana Smith was 3-for-4 with a double, one RBI, and two runs scored to pace the offense. She also turned in a stellar performance in the pitcher's circle, allowing five hits and one run with three strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Briana Smith improves to 7.0 on the season and is currently sporting a 0.28 ERA.

Susan Duncan continued swinging a hot bat, going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored, while Hunter Hart followed in the order and went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Bri Smith finished 2-for-4 at the dish, Arizona Shreck was 1-for-2 with a double, three RBI, and two runs scored. Emily Smith tallied one hit and drove in a pair of runs, while Maggie Duncan collected a hit and an RBI. Veronica Maryanski and Savannah Wilson both scored a run.

In game two, Berks came out swinging with a three-spot in the top of the first. Harrisburg got a run back in the bottom of the second, but Berks tallied six runs in the third to build a 9-1 cushion and added two more in the fourth to go up 11-1. Harrisburg scored once in the bottom of fifth and were threatening to plate more before Berks got the final out to win by the mercy rule.

Susan Duncan was 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, Shreck finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Bri Smith went 2-for-2 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored, while Maggie Duncan added two hits, a double, two RBI, and a run scored. Wilson was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, Hart added a hit, stolen base, and scored twice.

Shreck allowed eight hits and two runs in 5.0 innings of work to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 18 at 1 p.m.
