Baseball drops two in season opener to Harrisburg

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks baseball team was faced with a tall task going against preseason No. 27 ranked Penn State Harrisburg, while also shaking off some rust after a two-week layover. Berks worked through some ups-and-downs as they dropped a pair of games to Harrisburg by scores of 21-6 and 13-5.

Berks took an early 3-1 lead in game one, but Harrisburg put up some lopsided numbers in the fourth and fifth innings to take control of the game.

Alex Laudenslager struck out three batters in 3.0 innings and picked off a runner in the opening frame. Dale Murphy struck out one batter and allowed one hit in 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Justin Renninger had three strikeouts and two hits allowed in a scoreless inning of relief.

Joe Gramignano went 2-for-4 with a double, RBI, and a run scored, while Jay Pettit, Bryce Stout, and Rich Mueller all went 1-for-2 with a run scored. Eric Gale and Josh Hernandez both had RBI doubles, while Pat Maloney finished 1-for-2. Nate Trovinger and Sam Perrone each scored a run for the Nittany Lions.

In game two, Berks was hampered by one big inning by Harrisburg that put the game out of reach midway through. Chad Evans had five strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work and Pettit recorded three punchouts in 3.0 innings of relief. Tate Yergey struck out a pair of batters in the eighth inning and Perrone had one strikeout in the ninth.

Tom Hegedus was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Stout finished 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Octavio Orona drove in two runners with a single down the right field line in the eighth inning. Gramignano, Trovinger, and Mueller all tallied hits for Berks. Zah Kratz and Maloney both scored runs.

The Nittany Lions will host Lancaster Bible College in a NEAC doubleheader on Friday, April 2. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
