Women's volleyball sweeps; clinches United East Regular Season crown

WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball team clinched the United East Conference Regular Season title and the right to host the postseason tournament after defeating Penn State Abington, 3-1, and Penn College, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions rolled to their seventh straight victory to improve to 17-14 overall and a perfect 8-0 in the conference.

Against Abington, Berks took the first two sets by scores of 25-21 and 25-13, but Abington won a 30-28 thriller in the third. Berks finished off the match with a 25-22 triumph in the fourth set.

Kayla Zelonka finished with a team-high 15 kills and a season-best 20 digs, while also adding three aces, two total blocks, and two assists. Cassie Shoupe chipped in 12 kills and 16 digs, while Sarah Nichols added 10 kills and Amelia Magazzu had nine. Marie Durkota match Zelonka with a team-best 20 digs, while also adding three aces. Natalia Perez also had three aces, while Abby Mattis and Shoupe both had a pair of aces. Julia Rathsam handed out 37 assists and picked up 15 digs.

The Nittany Lions won by scores of 25-8, 25-15, 25-14 in the win over host Penn College.

Rathsam collected a career-high eight service aces to go along with 22 assists, eight digs, and three kills. Shoupe followed with four aces, Zelonka added three, and Perez registered two. Zelonka had a team-high seven kills, followed by Magazzu and Shoupe with six. Durkota racked up a team-high 16 digs, followed by Shoupe with 15 and Zelonka with 10.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Morrisville at 7:30 pm in the semifinal round of the United East Conference Tournament on Friday, November5. The other semifinal will be Gallaudet University (No. 2) vs. Penn State Harrisburg (No. 3) at 5 p.m. The winner of each semifinal match will play in the Championship round on Saturday at 2 p.m.
