Softball splits on third day of spring trip

CLERMONT, FLA - The Penn State Berks softball team split a pair of games on the third day of The Spring Games in Florida. The Nittany Lions opened the day with a 7-3 triumph over Westminster (Pa.) College, followed by a 5-2 setback to Wisconsin Lutheran College in the second game of the afternoon.

The Titans scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-0 lead, but an RBI single by Madisen Straub in the top of the fourth to make it 2-1. The Nittany Lions followed with four runs in the fifth inning to pull ahead 5-2. Westminster scored a run in the sixth to make it 5-3, but Berks tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and held the Titans off the board in the bottom of the inning.

Hunter Hart went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Bri Smith finished 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI, and two runs scored. Straub was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, while Maddy Davidson was also 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Nikki Wild, Erin Spatz, and Susan Duncan all went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Peyton Morrell picked up her first win of the season with a complete game effort. The junior right-hander scattered five hits and surrendered three runs - one earned - while striking out two batters.

Against Wisconsin Lutheran, Berks got on the board first with an RBI single by Amaya Phillips in the bottom of the first. The Warriors evened it up in the top of the second and took a 3-1 lead with two runs in the third. They extended their lead to 4-1 with a run in the fifth, but Davidson had a leadoff single and came around to score in the sixth to make it 4-2. Wisconsin Lutheran added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and set the Nittany Lions down in order in the bottom half.

Smith, Davidson, and Veronica Maryanski were all 2-for-3, while Duncan was 2-for-4 with a double. Cori Dickinson was 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Phillips went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will finish off their spring trip with a pair of games on Wednesday, March 11. They will face Swarthmore College at 1:30 p.m., followed by Belhaven University at 4 p.m.
