Softball drops two on final day of spring trip

CLERMONT, FL - The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a pair of setbacks on the final day of the spring break trip. The Nittany Lions fell 8-4 in their opener against Swarthmore College, followed by a rally that came up short in a 6-4 loss to Belhaven University.

Bri Smith and Nikki Wild had RBIs in the top of the third to give Berks an early 2-0 lead, but the Garnet responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Swarthmore tallied three more runs in the fourth inning to go ahead 6-2, but Smith drove in two runs with a single in the fifth to pull within 6-4. Swarthmore tacked on a single run in the fifth and sixth to pick up the win.

Smith finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, while Hunter Hart was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Cori Dickinson had a 1-for-4 showing with two runs scored and Veronica Maryanski was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Belhaven scored a run in the second and third innings before adding three more in the fourth to grab a 5-0 lead. The Blazers extended their lead to 6-0 with their final run of the game in the sixth inning. In the bottom of the sixth, Maryanski scored Madisen Straub with a ground out to first and Melanie Showers later came around to score on a wild pitch to make it 6-2. In the seventh, Erin Spatz had an RBI single to score Mikayla Davis scored on a fielder's choice by Straub.

Wild finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while seven other players recorded a hit.

The Nittany Lions will host Moravian College in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 17 at 3 p.m.
