WBB downs Keuka for sixth straight win

KEUKA PARK, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team dominated the paint and the glass en route to a 72-53 win over Keuka College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (15-9, 11-5 NEAC) extended their season-high winning streak to six straight. They were able to do so by outscoring the Wolves (10-13, 6-10 NEAC) by score of 50-20 in the paint and outrebounding the hosts by a 45-32 margin.

Berks held a 24-16 lead after the first period and half-court buzzer-beater by Kylie Herman at the end of the second quarter gave the Nittany Lions an 43-25 advantage going into the break. Berks tacked on four more points to its lead in the third quarter to take a 22 point lead (57-35) going into the final 10 minutes of play. The deficit was too much to overcome as Keuka outscored the Nittany Lions, 18-15, in the final quarter of play.

Julia Bookwalter turned in a phenomenal effort as she registered a game-high with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and three blocked shots in 32 minutes of action. The junior forward did the bulk of her scoring in the first half after recording 17 points on 8-of-15 shooting.

Herman turned in a 22 point effort, which marks the fifth time in the last six games that she has tallied 20 or more points. In addition, Herman had six assists, four boards, three steals, and one block in 40 minutes of play. The senior guard got a rebound off a missed foul shot with 4.1 seconds remaining in the first half. She took a couple of dribbles and got off a shot from a step beyond half-court that hit nothing but net.

Nicole Kopcik rounded out the Nittany Lions scoring in double figures with 13 points. She also added eight rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Katie Armstrong finished with eight points, eight assists, seven boards, and five steals. Lex Schratt, who netted two points, had two steals and matched a career-high with four rebounds.

Samantha Laranjo led the Wolves with 12 points, followed by Riley Record with 10 and Meaghan McGwin with nine.

The Nittany Lions finish the regular season as the No. 2 seed in the NEAC South. They will host Penn State Harrisburg in the NEAC First Round on Tuesday, February 25 at 7 p.m.
