Men's soccer plays Penn College to 2-2 draw

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's soccer team battled back from two different deficits before finishing in a 2-2 draw with Penn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) contest on Wednesday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions are now 2-4-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats are 1-5-1 on the season and also sit at 1-1-1 in the conference.

Berks had possession through most of the opening half and missed strong scoring opportunities in the opening 15 minutes, including a shot by Alex Khaldaoui that hit off the crossbar and two shots on goal by Brenden Valverde. Ayden Lee and Valverde tested keeper Braden Eckhard a few more times over the next 10 minutes, but were held off the scoreboard.

After that, the Wildcats started pressuring on their offensive end of the field before breaking through with a goal by Daniel Jackson from Josiah Potts at the 33:59 mark of the contest. Each team placed on a shot on net over the remainder of the period, but neither was able to score.

In the 60th minute, Valverde played a cross in the box to Lee, who took a dribble and placed a shot inside the near post to knot the contest at 1-all.

Over the next 20 minutes, Penn College had two shots saved by Jose Aparicio and the Nittany Lions put a few shots wide and managed a corner, but neither team could break the tie. The Wildcats went ahead 2-1 when Declan Gatchell headed a loose ball to Colton Wartman, who then headed the ball over the keeper and into the net at the 81:48 mark.

The Nittany Lions did not waste any time evening the match. Khaldaoui passed to Nate Nguyen, who deflected to an open Valverde. Valverde immediately fired off a shot into the far back corner to even the match at 2-all in the 84th minute with his team-leading 8th goal of the year.

In the closing minutes of regulation, Aparicio and Eckhard each made two saves. The closest play to ending the tie was a shot by Gabriel McKeon at the 89:18 mark that deflected off the right post.

The only offense generated in the first overtime was a pair of corner kicks by Berks. In the second overtime frame, JAKOB FISCHER had header sail just high of the target and Valverde had a shot blocked, while the Wildcats managed two corner kicks.

Aparicio finished the contest with six saves in 110 minutes of action, while Eckhard recorded seven stops. For the game, Berks outshot the Wildcats by a 17-14 margin (9-8 on goal) and held a 10-4 advantage on corner kicks.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC contest on Saturday, September 28 at 2 p.m.
