Softball sweeps Cobleskill, runs win streak to eight straight

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team came out on top in a pair of thrillers en route to a sweep of visiting SUNY Cobleskill during Sunday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) at Hintz Athletic Field. THe Nittany Lions won 3-1 in the opener, followed by a walk-off 3-2 victory in the second game of the twinbill.

The Nittany Lions have now won eight straight games to improve to 16-8 overall and 6-0 in the NEAC, while the Tigers fall to 6-10 on the season and 3-3 in the conference. Jess Rozick and Val Miller each turned in stellar performances in the circle, as both surrendered just two hits in their complete-game efforts.

In the opener, Rozick struck out a season-high 13 batters. At one point early in the game, the senior right-hander struck out seven consecutive batters. With the victory, Rozick improves to 7-4 overall, with 10 complete games, 66 strikeouts and a 2.00 ERA in 73.1 innings of work.

Berks had gotten on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the first inning after taking advantage of three Cobleskill errors. The Nittany Lions extended their lead in the second when Rozick had a two-out single, moved up to second on a passed ball and scored on a single to left center by Hunter Hart.

The Tigers got their leadoff batter on base after a Berks error. The next batter appeared to have a hit through the right side of the infield, but Sophia Cinti came up throwing and got the runner out at first base. During the play, however, the runner on first made her way all the way to third base. The following batter sent a single to right field and Cinti's throw was right on the money and in time at home, but the runner was able to knock the ball loose as she scored to make it 2-1 in Berks' favor.

Berks added a little breathing room with another run in the bottom of the fourth. Heather Rissell singled to left field, followed by Rozick with a bunt single. The runners each moved up on a ground out by Hart and Rissell scored from third on a ground out by Miller.

Rozick set down the final nine batters in order to secure the victory in game one. At the plate, Rozick finished 3-for-3 with one run scored.

The second game was a pitcher's duel between Miller and Arielle Kranbuhl, with both pitcher's putting up zeroes on the scoreboard over the first four innings.

In the bottom of the fifth, Berks was able put two runs up on the board. Rissell and Veronica Maryanski both walked and Miller moved them each up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Cori Dickinson singled to left center to score both Rissell and Maryanski.

Cobleskill broke up Miller's perfect game with a lead off single in the top of the sixth. After a strikeout, the Nittany Lions committed an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt to put runners on first and second. Jill Nitchman singled to right field and the relay throw to home got away, allowing both runners to score and tie the game at 2-all with just one out. Berks got the second out of the inning after a grounder fielded by Miller led to a run down between home and third. Miller got the final out of the inning with a ground out to short.

Berks went down in order in its half of the sixth and Miller set Cobleskill down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh. Maryanski led off the bottom of the seventh with a single up the middle. Hart put down a sacrifice bunt and the throw to first got away, allowing Hunt to reach first and Maryanski to go from first to third. Kranbuhl got an infield pop up for the first out, but Brianna Smith ended the game with a sharp grounder the hit off the shortstops glove as pinch runner Ashley Berry raced home from third with the winning run.

Millers final line for the game was two hits and two runs (both unearned), with three strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work.

The Nittany Lions will travel to New York for a pair of NEAC doubleheaders this weekend. They will face SUNY Poly on Sautrday, April 13 at 1 p.m., followed by Morrisville State on SUnday at 12 p.m.
