Softball sweeps SUNY Poly on the road

CLINTON, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks softball team extended its winning streak to 10 straight after picking up a sweep on the road over SUNY Poly in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Hamilton College. The Nittany Lions took the opener by a 12-1 margin, followed by an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.

The Nittany Lions improve to 18-8 overall and 8-0 in the NEAC, while the Wildcats fall to 8-14 on the season and 5-5 in the conference.

In the opener, Berks put up three runs in the second inning and exploded for nine runs in the third inning to build an early 12-0 lead. SUNY Poly tallied one run in the bottom of the third, but that was their only offense on the day.

Becca Faust finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the offense. Hunter Hart was 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI, and one runs scored, while Brianna Smith was 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored. Sophia Cinti also notched a double, while going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one runs score. Heather Rissell finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and a runs scored, Cori Dickinson walked twice and scored two runs.

Jess Rozick picked up the win in the circle after scattering five hits and allowing one run, while striking out seven batters.

In the second game, Berks scored four runs in the second inning and then put up a two-spot in both the third and fourth innings.

Amaya Phillips recorded the first home run of her career with a three-run blast in the second inning. Rissell went 2-for-2 with a double, one RBI, and one run scored. Faust went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a run scored, while Maddy Davidson added one double and scored a run.

Val Miller turned in a solid performance in the pitcher's circle with a one-hit shutout. She struck out two batters and did not issue any walks on her way to earning her eighth win of the season.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Morrisville State for a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 14 at 12 p.m.
