Softball takes two from Keuka

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball teams picked up a sweep of Keuka College in a crucial North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions took the opener by a 6-3 score and then earned a 3-0 shutout in the second game of the twinbill.

The Nittany Lions extended their season long winning streak to six straight as they improve to 14-8 overall and 4-0 in the NEAC. The Wolves drop to 5-11 overall and now sit at 2-2 in the conference.

Berks was one strike away from picking up a shutout in the opener, but a changeup by Jess Rozick was called for ball and the batter eventually singled to extend the inning. One batter later, a double and a Berks error accounted for three runs to make it 6-3. Rozick kept cool and recorded her seventh strikeout of the game to seal the victory. The senior right-hander finished the contest with eight hits allowed and surrendered three runs (two earned), while not issuing any walks.

The Nittany Lions did all of their scoring in the second and third inning. Becca Faust reached on a one-out single for a rally starter that also happened to be her 100th career hit. With two outs, Heather Rissell made the Wolves pay with a two-run home run to center field to put Berks ahead early. It was the second homer of the season for Rissell and fourth of her career.

In the third, Brianna Smith led off with a walk and Sophia Cinti followed with a single to left field. CORI DICKINSON smoked a ground-rule double down the left field line to bring in Smith from second base. Faust brought home Cinti with a single to right field to extend the lead to 4-0. Faust and Dickinson pulled off a successful double steal, with Dickinson just beating the throw to home to go up 5-0. The four-run inning was capped on a sacrifice fly to center field by Rissell that scored Faust from third.

Faust and Rissell each finished 2-for-3 at the plate and combined for four RBI and three runs scored. Hunter Hart, Cinti, Dickinson, Maddy Davidson, and Rozick all finished the game 1-for-3.

Val Miller tossed a complete-game gem in the second game. The senior left-hander gave up just three hits and struck out two batters to earn her sixth win and third shutout of the season. Miller set down the final 10 batters in order and did not allow a runner in scoring position after the third inning. In addition, Miller fielded her position excellently and finished with six assists.

Berks broke through with all three of its runs in the bottom of the third inning. Hart reached first on an error and Miller put down a beautiful sacrifice bunt that turned into a bunt single. Smith drove in both runners with a double to the right center field gap. Cinti followed with a deep double down that hugged the right field line to easily score Smith and give the Nittany Lions a 3-0 cushion.

Keuka nearly opened up the scoring in the top of the third. With one out and runners on first and second, the Wolves batter hit a spinner to Faust, who could not hang onto the the ball. The runner from second tried to score, but Faust quickly collected the loose ball and fired a strike to Smith at home to get the runner by two steps. Miller then fielded a comebacker and fired to first for the final out of the inning.

Smith and Dickinson both collected two hits, while Miller and Cinti each had one.

The softball team joined men's and women's tennis in hosting their annual Pink Game to benefit the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Cobleskill in a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 7 at 12 p.m.
