Softball sweeps Gallaudet on Senior Day

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team celebrated Senior Day with a sweep of Gallaudet University in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions won the opener by a score of 11-0 in five innings and then finished off the day with an 8-0 victory in six innings in game two.

The Nittany Lions have now won 16 straight games to improve to 24-8 overall and 14-0 in the NEAC, while the Bison drop to 10-18 on the year and 2-12 in the conference. Prior to the start of game one, after a long back-and-forth battle with the tarp and dealing with weather conditions, the Nittany Lions were able to honor the careers of Mackie Caffrey, Becca Faust, Val Miller, Heather Rissell, and Jess Rozick. The group of seniors all played important roles to get the sweep this afternoon.

In the opener, Rozick tossed a one-hit, shutout to earn her 11th victory of the season. The right-hander struck out seven batters and allowed just one batter to get as far as second base for the entire game.

At the plate, freshman outfielder Maddy Davidson finished 3-for-3 with one double, three RBI, and three runs scored to lead the offense. Faust was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, while Brianna Smith and Sophia Cinti each had one hit, two RBI, and a runs scored.

Miller threw a complete game, three-hit shutout in game two to pick up her 10th win of the year. She struck out five batters and allowed just two runners to get to second base. The left-hander retired the first 11 batters that she faced and did not allow a hit until the top of the fourth inning.

Rissell smacked a line drive single to left field to give Berks the 8-run rule in the bottom of the sixth. Hunter Hart finished 3-for-4 with two triples and two runs scored. Davidson was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored, while Faust and Veronica Maryanski were both 2-for-3 with an RBI.

The Nittany Lions have a pair of doubleheaders on the road next weekend to wrap up the regular season. They will face the College of Saint Elizabeth on Friday, April 26, followed by Penn State Abington on Saturday, April 27.
