Softball picks up home sweep of Albright

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball picked up its first ever sweep of Albright College on Tuesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions (12-8) claimed the first game by a 4-1 score, followed by a 12-4 victory in five innings in game two.

In game one, Jess Rozick opened the contest with a strikeout of the leadoff batter, but a dropped third strike allowed the run to get to first. After another strikeout, the third batter hit the ball back up the middle, which Rozick fielded and started a 1-6-3 inning ending double play. Each team went down in order over the next three half innings, before Albright got the first hit of the game with a leadoff single in the top of hte third. Rozick recorded a strikeout, before Albright (8-10) advanced the runner to second with a sacrifice fly. Berks got out of the inning with a fly out to left field to leave the runner stranded in scoring position.

In the bottom of the third, Nikki Wild stayed alive after when a dropped foul ball extended her at-bat. The junior catcher fouled off a few pitches and her lengthy at-bat ended with a walk to start off the inning. Two batters later, Rozick singled to center field to put runners on first and second with one out. Hunter Hart then delivered a drive over the right fielders head to plate Wild and Rozick, as Hart ended up on third with her team leading third double of the season. Brianna Smith drove in Hart with a two-out double over the left fielders head to make it 3-0 in favor of the Nittany Lions.

The fourth batter of the inning grounded a ball to Smith at first, who fired home to get the lead runner. Mackie Caffrey threw to first to double up the batter, but the ball hit the runner in the middle of the back.
