Softball picks up sweep of Lancaster Bible

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team received another couple of superb pitching performances to pick up a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) wins over Lancaster Bible College on Friday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions won 5-0 in the opener and took the second game 9-1 in six innings to finish off the sweep.

Berks has extended its winning streak to 14 straight to improve to 22-8 overall and 4-0 in the NEAC South Division, while the Chargers fall to 11-19 on the season and 1-5 in the division.

In the opener, Jess Rozick tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout to earn her 10 win of the season. The senior right-hander finished with eight strikeouts, giving her six straight games with seven or more strikeouts. Rozick did not allow any runners to reach third base and the Chargers were only able to get three batters to second base against her.

Offensively, the Nittany Lions were able to quickly put up two runs after just three batters in the bottom of the first inning. Hunter Hart led off with a single to right field and came around to score after a single down the line by Maddy Davidson was misplayed by the right fielder. Brianna Smith delivered an RBI double down the right field line to bring in Davidson with the second run.

Cori Dickinson led off the fourth inning with a double to right field and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Heather Rissell. Dickinson later scored from third on a groundout to short by Mackie Caffrey to extend the lead to 3-0.

Berks tacked on its final two runs of the game in the bottom of the fifth. Davidson collected her third hit of the game, a single through the right side of the infield, and stole second to move into scoring position. Smith followed with an RBI single up the middle. ASHLEY BERRY pinch ran for Smith and immediately stole second base. Two batters later, Dickinson singled back up the middle to bring in Berry from second.

Davidson finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Smith and Dickinson were both 2-for-3. Smith recorded two RBI, while Dickinson had one RBI and one run scored.

The second game started out rather sloppy for the Nittany Lions, with the first two LBC batters reaching base on a Berks error. The third batter of the inning grounded a ball to short and the runner was called out due to interference for the first out of the inning. Starting pitcher Val Miller then got a ground out and strike out to escape the inning unscathed.

Berks had another error in the second inning that moved Kendra Brown, who singled earlier, up to second base with two outs. Brown moved up to third on a wild pitch and came in to score on a single to right center by Martina McCauley to even the game at 1-all.

Miller settled in from there and did not allow any runners beyond second base the rest of the way. The senior left-hander finished the game with four hits and one unearned run allowed, while striking out three batters in 6.0 innings of work. Miller improved to 9-2 on the season after earning the win in the circle.

The Nittany Lions got on the board in the first when Sophia Cinti singled home Hart from second. In the bottom of the second, Rissell led off with a double and scored on a single through the right side by Abby Files to give Berks a 2-1 lead. They went up 3-1 in the third when Smith doubled and eventually scored on a single by Dickinson. Cinti drove in two runs with a double in the fourth and came around to score on a single by Dickinson for a 6-1 lead.

Berks was able to end the game with the 8-run mercy rule in the bottom of the sixth. Dickinson had a lead off single and scored on a double by Rissell. Files followed with a single and moved up to second with a stolen base. Miller then looped a single into left center to bring in Rissell and Files.

Dickinson, Cinti, and Files were all 3-for-4 and the trio combined for six RBI and three runs scored. Hart, Smith, Rissell, and Miller all collected a pair of hits.

The Nittany Lions will host Gallaudet University in a NEAC South Division doubleheader on Saturday, April 20 at 12 p.m. Prior to the start of game one, Berks will host Senior Day honors for Caffrey, Faust, Miller, Rissell, and Rozick.
