Softball splits on final day of spring trip

KISSIMMEE, FLA. - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up play on Thursday with a 4-2 setback to Eastern Nazarene College, but bounced back with a 4-1 victory over DeSales University to salvage a split on the final day in Florida. The Nittany Lions finished the spring break trip with a 5-3 record.

In the opener, the Nittany Lions were able to get runners on the bases, but left them stranded through the first five innings. In the top of the sixth, Berks used a two-out rally to score two runs and pull within 4-2 of Eastern Nazarene. Cori Dickinson got the rally started with a single to left field and Becca Faust followed with a single up the middle. Mackie Caffrey delivered a double to left field to score Dickinson. Heather Rissell laced a single to left field to bring in Faust from third. In the seventh inning, Val Miller had a one-out single to put the tying run at the plate, but the Lions (8-4) pitcher got a pair of strikeouts to end the game.

Jess Rozick and Miller split time in the pitcher's circle and had nearly identical stat lines. They each gave up five hits and two runs runs, while striking out one batter in 3.0 innings of work.

Against DeSales, the Nittany Lions handed the ball to Melanie Showers for her first collegiate showing in the pitcher's circle. The freshman right-hander picked up the win after scattering four hits and allowing one run, while striking out one batter in 5.0 innings pitched. Miller earned the first save of her career after tossing a pair of 1-2-3 innings.

At the plate, Abby Files drove in a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to give the Nittany Lions a 3-run cushion at 4-1. She finished the game 1-for-3 with two runs batted in. Veronica Maryanski was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Cori Dickinson finished 2-for-4 with a double. Hunter Hart added one hit and drove in a run. Caffrey walked twice and scored two runs, while Erin Spatz and Showers each scored a run.

The Nittany Lions return to action with a doubleheader at Penn State Harrisburg on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m.
