Softball splits doubleheader at Harrisburg

MIDDLETOWN, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a 6-5 setback to Penn State Harrisburg in the opening game, but bounced back with a 9-0 rout in six innings in the nightcap to salvage a split in the non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.

In the opener, Berks (6-4) scored four runs in the top of the first inning. Becca Faust had an RBI single to score Hunter Hart, followed by Heather Rissell with a double to score Cori Dickinson and Faust. Cori Dickinson drove in Rissell with a single to cap off the scoring.

Harrisburg got one run back in the bottom of first and tallied another run in the fourth to make it a 4-2 game. Berks added a run to its lead when Hart singled to score Dickinson. Harrisburg then grabbed the lead with a four-run sixth inning behind a two-run double and a two-run home run.

Faust went 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI, while Hart and Dickinson each recorded two hits, one RBI, and scored a run.

In the second contest, Hart opened up the game with a double and came around to score on a double by Brianna Smith for an early 1-0 lead. They tacked on three more runs in the top of the third, starting with a leadoff solo homer by Hart. Dickinson belted a double to score Val Miller and Sophia Cinti later delivered an RBI double to drive in Dickinson. Miller and Smith each had an RBI in the fourth to build a 6-0 advantage. Hart continued her fine day with an RBI single in the fifth. Berks capped off its scoring in sixth with RBI singles by Cinti and Erin Spatz.

Miller picked up the win in the pitcher's circle with 6.0 shutout innings, scattering three hits and striking out five batters.

Hart and Cinti both finished 4-for-4 with two RBI to pace the Berks offense. Hart also scored three runs with a double and a homer, while Cinti recorded a pair of doubles. Smith was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs batted in, while three players each had a hit and an RBI.

The Nittany Lions will host Swarthmore College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 19 at 3 p.m.
