Softball picks up sweep with a pair of thrillers on Wednesday

KISSIMMEE, FLA. - The Penn State Berks softball team picked up a pair of thrilling victories on the third day of its spring break trip on Wednesday. The Nittany Lions defeated Rhodes College by a score of 2-1 in the morning and later held off Muhlenberg College in a 6-4 victory.

The Nittany Lions (4-2) received a phenomenal effort from Jess Rozick in the pitcher's circle. The senior also had a huge impact on the game with her bat, as she smacked the first home run of her college career with a solo shot down the right field line in the top of the sixth. That run gave Berks a 2-0 lead at the time and later proved to be the winning margin after the Lynx (13-2) scratched out a run in the bottom of the sixth.

Rozick tossed a complete-game, two-hitter with just one run allowed to earn the win in the circle. The right-hander recorded nine strikeouts, which matched her output in the season opener against Misericordia for most strikeouts in a game this year. Rhodes got a run in the bottom of the sixth and had the tying run in scoring position with just one out. But Rozick got a pop up to shortstop for the second out and forced a ground out just in front of the plate to end the inning. She then secured the victory with a groundout and pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh.

Brianna Smith was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Hunter Hart, Becca Faust, and Rozick all finished 1-for-3. In addition, Hart recorded one double and scored a run. Mackie Caffrey had a 1-for-2 showing at the plate.

Against Muhlenberg, the Nittany Lions were trailing 1-0 in the second inning, but a two-run homer by Heather Rissell capped off a three run inning. The Mules (5-2) tallied a run in the top of the fourth to cut the Berks lead to 3-2. The offense then put up another three-spot after Erin Spatz, Hart, and Val Miller each drove in a run to extend the lead to 6-2.

In the fifth, Muhlenberg quickly put two runs across the plate and had a runner on third base with just one out. Miller was able to work out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout to third to keep Berks up by two runs. Miller tossed a 1-2-3 sixth inning and worked around a one-out single in the seventh to earn her first win of the season.

Miller scattered nine hits and allowed four runs (two earned), while striking out three batters in 7.0 innings of work.

Rissell finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI, and two runs scored. Hart was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Miller and Veronica Maryanski both had a hit and drove in a run.

The Nittany Lions will wrap up their spring break trip with a doubleheader on Thursday, March 7. Berks will face Eastern Nazarene at 3:45 p.m., followed by DeSales University at 6 p.m.
