Softball splits on day two of spring break trip

ORLANDO, FLA. - The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a 5-0 setback to Trine University, but bounced back with a 4-1 triumph over John Carroll University to salvage a split on the second day of the spring break trip in Florida.

Jess Rozick had the Nittany Lions (2-2) lone hit in the opener against Trine with a double to right center in the first inning. Heather Rissell had a walk and a stolen base. In the pitcher's circle, Rozick went six innings with five hits and five runs (three earned) allowed. She finished the contest with a pair of strikeouts.

In the win over John Carroll, Becca Faust had a solid showing in the pitcher's circle and at the plate. The senior right-hander tossed a complete-game gem, scattering six hits and allowing only one run, while striking out four batters. Faust helped her own cause at the plate, where she was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

Freshman Amaya Phillips went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, while Rissell was 1-for-3 with a triple, one run scored, and one run batted in. Hunter Hart had an RBI double in the in the third inning to give Berks an early 1-0 lead. Melanie Showers chipped in one hit and scored a run, while Abby Files had a stolen base and scored once.

The Nittany Lions will enjoy an off day on Tuesday, followed by games on Wednesday, March 6 against Rhodes College (9 a.m.) and Muhlenberg College (4 p.m.)
