WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team opened up North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play with a sweep on the road over Penn College on Saturday afternoon. The Nittany Lions took the first game 8-0 in five innings and finished off the day with a 2-0 victory in the second contest.

The Nittany Lions (10-8, 2-0 NEAC) got off to a hot start with five runs in the first inning of the opener. Hunter Hart led off the game with a triple to right field, followed by walks to Val Miller and Brianna Smith to load the bases. Sophia Cinti and Cori Dickinson each had RBI singles and Nikki Wild walked with the bases loaded to force in a run. Jess Rozick delivered a two-run single to give Berks a 5-0 lead before even taking the field for defense.

Berks tacked on three runs in the top of the fifth to build an 8-0 cushion. Smith led off the inning with a single and was lifted for pinch runner Ashley Berry. Cinti followed with a single and Becca Faust reached on a fielder's choice, but scored Berry in the process. Wild also reached via fielder's choice and drove in Cinti from third. Heather Rissell and Rozick each had singles to load up the bases and Hart drew a walk to force in Wild with the final run of the game.

Rozick recorded her first 1-2-3 inning of the game in the bottom of the fifth to secure the victory. The senior right-hander allowed only two hits, while striking out four batters in a shutout effort.

Smith, Cinti, and Rozick all collected two hits, with Rozick driving in a team-high two runs and Cinti scoring twice.

The second game was a scoreless tie through the first three innings before Berks broke through with a run in the top of the fourth. ABBY FILES had a one-out single and advanced to second on an error by the left fielder. Files moved up to third on another error and scored on a bunt single by Maddy Davidson.

Berks doubled its lead in the fifth, which started with a single by Smith to start the inning. Pinch runner Berry moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Cinti and scored on single to center by Faust.

Miller was in total control all game long in the pitcher's circle. The senior left-hander scattered four hits and struck out one batter in a complete-game shutout. In the final inning, Miller forced three ground outs to herself to wrap up the game.
