Softball drops a pair of close ones to Moravian

BETHLEHEM, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team dropped a pair of close games to perennial powerhouse Moravian College in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon. The Greyhounds (15-3) scored all their runs in the bottom of the first in a 3-0 victory in game one and then had a walk-off 4-3 in nine innings in the second game of the twinbill.

In the opener, Hunter Hart led with a double to center to start the game for the Nittany Lions (8-8), but was left stranded on third base. In the bottom half of the inning, Moravian loaded up the bases with its first three hitters, but Jess Rozick was able to get the first out with a strikeout. The following batter singled in the first run, followed by a second strikeout for out two. The No. 7 batter in the order then placed a single to right center field to add two more runs, before Rozick grabbed a come backer out of the air for the final out.

Over the next four innings, Rozick allowed one base runner each inning, but none got beyond second base. The senior right-hander had her first 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth, which started out with Sophia Cinti throwing out the the runner at first base from her position in right field. Rozick then got a groundout to Veronica Maryanski at second and fielded another ball herself.

The Berks offense was unable to generate any scoring opportunities off of Alexandria Scheeler, who went the distance in her winning effort in the pitcher's circle. She allowed just the leadoff double to Hart and struck out one batter in seven scoreless innings. Rozick's final line was eight hits and three runs allowed, while striking out three batters in six innings.

In the second game, Val Miller and Paige Lesher faced off against each other in the circle. Each pitcher worked around hits in the first two innings to keep the game scoreless in the early going. The Nittany Lions broke through with the first run of the game in the top of the third. After two quick ground outs, Miller laced a double to left center field and came into score on a single to right center by Brianna Smith.

Berks looked poise to add to the lead in the fourth inning after a double by Cori Dickinson and single by Becca Faust put runners on the corner with no outs. But Lesher was able to get a strike out, followed by a fly out to center that was not deep enough to score the runner from third. Lesher escaped the jam unscathed after getting a grounder to short for the final out.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Greyhounds scored a pair of runs with two outs to go up 2-1. Miller worked around a lead off single in the fifth inning to keep Berks within striking distance. In the top of the sixth, Cinti drew a walk and was lifted for pinch runner Ashley Berry, who was moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dickinson. Pinch hitter Amaya Phillips reached base on a throwing error, which allowed Berry to score from second base and even the game at 2-all.

Both teams went down in order over their next at-bats, before things got interesting in the bottom of the seventh. With the game still tied, Miller got the first two batters out, but a single and a Berks error had two on base for Moravian with the game on the line. Miller was able to escape the jam by forcing a pop out to first base for the final out of the inning.

With the game heading to extras, Miller was placed on second base with the international tiebreaker rule. Smith led off the top of the eighth with a single to left field to bring in Miller and put Berks ahead 3-2. Cinti followed with a sacrifice bunt to move pinch runner Mackie Caffrey up to second base, but she was left stranded after a pair of fly outs.

Moravian opened up the inning with a ground out two second base that moved the tying run up to third base. Madison Shaneberger was able to drive in the run with an infield single to make it 3-3. Miller forced a pair of ground outs to force the game into the ninth inning.

Phillips bunted Faust over to third base to start the ninth, but the Nittany Lions were not able to get the run in from there. Moravian also started off the inning with a sacrifice bunt and were able to tally the winning run when Brooke Wehr's grounder was too much to handle.

Miller, who tossed a career-high 8.1 innings, scattered nine hits and allowed four runs (two earned), while striking out two batters. Lesher picked up the win after surrendering seven hits and three runs (one earned), while striking out two in 9.0 innings.

Smith and Faust each finished 2-for-4, with Smith also adding two RBI. Miller went 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.

The Nittany Lions will get into NEAC play with a doubleheader at Penn College on Saturday, March 30 at 1 p.m.
