Softball swept on the road by Alvernia

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team suffered a pair of losses to Alvernia University in a non-conference doubleheader at Angelica Park on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Wolves won 3-0 in the opener and took the second game by a 14-7 score.

The Nittany Lions (8-6) were able to get runners on base in the first game, but could not find the timely hit to knock them in. In the first inning, Brianna Smith had a two-out single and Cori Dickinson doubled, but they were left stranded on base. Sophia Cinti and Nikki Wild each had singles in the second inning, but again the Nittany Lions left two on the base paths.

The Golden Wolves (11-7) offense broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth. They added another run in the bottom of the sixth after taking advantage of a Berks error.

Jess Rozick allowed just four hits and surrendered three runs (two earned), while striking out three batters. At the plate, six different players recorded a hit.

In the second game, Val Miller walked, advanced to third on a single by Smith and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dickinson. Miller got the offense going again in the top of the third with a two-out double and came in to score on a single to left center by Smith.

The Golden Wolves responded with three runs in the bottom of the third to go up 3-2. Berks answered back with five runs in the top of the fourth after recording four hits and taking advantage of one Alvernia miscue. Abby Files reached on an error and Maddy Davidson singled to left to get the rally started. Veronica Maryanski delivered a two-out single to left center to plate two runs. Maryanski then scored on a double to right center by Hunter Hart. Miller followed with a walk and later scored, along with Hart, on a single through the left side by Smith to put Berks ahead 7-3.

Alvernia chipped away at the deficit with three runs in the fourth and evened the game at 7-all with one run in the fifth. The Golden Wolves then broke the game open with seven runs, all of which came with two outs, in the bottom of the sixth.

Smith went 4-for-4 with a double, a stolen base, and three RBI to lead the Nittany Lions offense. Miller was 1-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored, while Maryanski finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Moravian College for a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday, March 26 at 3 p.m.
