Home runs and strong pitching propel softball to sweep of Swarthmore

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team received strong pitching efforts and timely home runs on offense to pick up a sweep over Swarthmore College in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions (8-4) held off a late rally for a 3-2 victory in game one, followed by a 4-1 triumph in the second contest.

Berks got on the board in its first at bat of the opening game. Sophia Cinti had a one out single and Brianna Smith drove a double to right-center field to to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 lead. Cori Dickinson blasted a homer well over the fence in left to give the Nittany Lions an early 3-0 cushion. The home run was the first of the season for Dickinson and second of her career.

Pitcher Jess Rozick carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning, with her only blemish of the game up until that point was a walk in the top of the second. The Garnet (8-5) broke up the no-hit bid with an infield single to lead off the seventh. Later in the inning, Swarthmore got its first run on a sacrifice fly and then an RBI single to center field put runners on first and second with just one out and Berks leading 3-2. Rozick calmed down and forced a pop up to third base in foul territory and ended the game with an infield pop out to second base.

Rozick improved to 3-2 on the season and recorded her fourth complete game of the season. The senior right-hander struck out five batters, while scattering two hits and allowing two runs. She lowered her ERA to 2.58 and raised her season total in strikeouts to 29.

Hunter Hart was the only person on either team to record multiple hits in the first game after going 2-for-3. Cinti, Smith, Dickinson, and Becca Faust all recorded one hit for Berks.

The second game was a pitcher's duel between Val Miller and Maddie Bowe. Berks loaded the bases in the bottom of the third with just one out, but Bowe got out of the inning unscathed. Bowe again escaped a bases load jam in the third inning when the third baseman made a nice play on a grounder down the line and tug third for a force out.

With Bowe working her way out of trouble to keep the shutout in tact, Miller was having a much easier time in the circle. The leadoff batter of the game reached on an error, but the Nittany Lions turned a double play on a line drive. The Garnet got their first hit of the game off of Miller in the fourth inning, but the runner was stranded on base.

Berks was able to break through with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hart led off with a walk and moved up to second on a sacrifice by Miller. Smith then smashed a deep home run to left center to put the home squad up 2-0. It was Smith's first long ball of the season and fourth of her career.

Swarthmore was able to get a run back in the top of the sixth after taking advantage of a Berks error. But the Nittany Lions responded with a  pair of runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 4-1. Heather Rissell singled to left field, followed by a single by Veronica Maryanski and a Garnet error on the play that advanced the runners into scoring position. Hart ripped a line drive single that landed in front of the left fielder to score Rissell and Maryanski.

Miller then worked a 1-2-3 seventh inning to improve to 3-1 on the season. The senior left-hander picked up her fourth complete game of the year after surrendering three hits and one unearned run, while striking out one batter.

Hart was 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run scored, and one walk, while Smith was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Rissell, Erin Spatz, and Maryanski each recorded a hit in the game.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Alvernia University for a doubleheader on Sunday, March 24 at 1 p.m.
