Women's basketball rallies for thrilling win over Mustangs

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - Kylie Herman made a layup with 3 seconds left and the defense forced Morrisville State into an off-balance shot at the buzzer that did not fall to give the Penn State Berks women's basketball team a thrilling 69-67 comeback win in Sunday afternoon's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Crossover contest.

The Nittany Lions (7-13, 5-9 NEAC) led 20-15 after the first quarter and took a 39-38 lead into the halftime intermission. Out of the break, the Mustangs (7-16, 6-8 NEAC) outscored Berks by six points to enter the fourth period leading 58-53.

Berks made a layup in the first minute of the fourth quarter and the Mustangs made one of their own moments later. Following that, both teams were held scoreless over the next three minutes and change. Elise Paskowski broke the drought with a jumper to pull within three points (60-57) with 5:34 to play. Deanna Daddona recorded a steal on the ensuing possession and Sam Brensinger knocked down a 3-pointer to even the game at 60-all. Morrisville State responded with a three of its own and maintained that lead until Lex Schratt made a free throw, followed by layups from Herman and Abbie Carr to put Berks up 67-65. The Mustangs knotted the game at 67-all with 1:31 to go, before the teams exchanged several misses and turnovers.

After a Berks timeout, Herman send the inbound pass to Brensinger, who then passed over to Carr at the top of the arc. Carr quickly delivered a pass to Herman under the basket, which she was able to kiss off the glass for two points and the lead with three ticks remaining on the clock. The Mustangs called a timeout and advanced the ball beyond half-court to set up a chance to tie or win. Morrisville State got the ball in the hands of its guard and set a screen on Brensinger to try to get an open look. But Herman switched and defended the ball and forced a last second shot that rattled off the rim as time expired.

The Nittany Lions had several players stuff the stat sheet in the winning effort. Herman led the offense with 23 points to go along with six rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocked shots. Paskowski and Carr had career-best performances en route to a double-double for both of them.
