WVB falls in semis to Morrisville State

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball had its season draw to a close after dropping a 3-0 decision to No. 1 seed Morrisville State in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Semifinal round on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions finish off the season with a 16-15 overall record, marking the first season with a record over .500 since 2016. Berks fell by game scores of 25-17, 25-10, 25-22 to the Mustangs (21-8).

Blair Eckel recorded a team-high eight kills, followed by Zoe Barna with seven. Eckel and Marie Durkota tied for the team-lead with eight digs each, while Barna added six. Barna and Sarah Nichols each had three block assists, while Syd Himmelberger assisted on two blocks and had one solo. Julia Rathsam notched 19 assists to go along with five digs, one aces, and a block assist.

The Mustangs were led by Megyan Merrill with 19 kills, while Amelia Baratier had 13 and Kristen Florio added nine. Samantha Wolf tallied a game-high 17 digs, while Siobhan Moore handed out 34 assists. With the win, Morrisville State will go to the NEAC Championship round against Penn State Abington, who downed Penn State Harrisburg, 3-2, later in the day.

After a down year in 2018, the Nittany Lions bounced back and made a return trip to the NEAC Postseason. The team rallied this past Tuesday for a thrilling 3-2 victory over Lancaster Bible College in the NEAC Quarterfinal round. Berks had three members earn all-conference recognition (Rathsam, Natalie Dwyer, Barna). With a roster full of underclassmen, head coach Jessie Franko and the Nittany Lions have a lot to look forward in 2020.
