Women's volleyball clinches playoff spot after sweeping Gallaudet

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's volleyball clinched a return trip to the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) postseason after defeating Gallaudet University, 3-0, in the regular season finale on Saturday afternoon at the Beaver Community Center.

The Nittany Lions (15-14, 7-4) won by set scores of 25-20, 25-22, 25-22 to snap a two-game losing streak to the Bison (11-23, 7-4 NEAC). Four teams finished the conference schedule with a 7-4 record with just three playoff spots remaining. Through tie-breakers, Lancaster Bible College claimed the No. 4 seed in the standings, followed by Berks in fifth and Gallaudet in sixth. Wells College finished in seventh place and missed out on the postseason tournament.

Zoe Barna finished with a team-high 11 kills, while committing only one error and finishing with a .345 hitting percentage. Syd Himmelberger, Blair Eckel, and Sarah Nichols all chipped in six kills. Julia Rathsam dished out 30 assists and had a team-high 15 digs.

Berks had its best defensive effort at the net all year with a season-high eight total blocks. Nichols had a season-best and game-high five block assists, while also adding one solo block. Rathsam had three block assists,while Himmelberger and Eckel each assisted on a pair of blocks.

In addition to clinching a postseason berth, the win gave head coach Jessie Franko the 100th of her career. Now in her sixth season, Franko owns a career record of 100-76.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for the NEAC Play-In game on Tuesday, November 5 at 7 p.m. The winning team will advance to the semifinal round, which will be played at No. 1 seed Morrisville State.
