Women's basketball downs Thiel at tip-off tourney

WESTMINSTER, MD - The Penn State Berks women's basketball team used a balanced attack en route to a 70-59 victory over Thiel College on the second day of the McDaniel College Tip-Off Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Nittany Lions (1-3) led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter and extended their lead to 38-28 at halftime. Berks continued to add to its lead by outscoring the Tomcats 17-13 in the third period to go up 55-41. The Nittany Lions held a double-digit lead for the bulk of the fourth quarter, but Thiel was able to narrow its deficit to eight points (64-56) with 2:04 remaining. Berks finished off the game with the final three points to seal the victory.

Julia Bookwalter finished with a team-high 13 points to go along with four rebounds, three steals, and an assist. Kaitlyn Armstrong and Sam Brensinger both chipped in 10 points, while Abbie Carr and Kristen Burdo each added eight. Carr pulled down a team-high 10 boards and Burdo followed with six. Armstrong had a game-high five steals, while Bookwalter and Nicole Kopcik both had three. Elise Paskowski notched a career-high four blocked shots.

Colleen Trainer had a game-high 18 points, followed by Courtney Harriman with points and five rebounds.

The Nittany Lions will host Cedar Crest College on Tuesday, November 19 at 6 p.m. Members of Penn State Berks SAAC will collect canned goods, other non-perishable food items, or a monetary donation for free admission to the contest.
