Men's basketball drops home tilt to Abington

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks men's basketball team battled back from an early hole, but Penn State Abington was able to pull away over the last 25 minutes of game play to defeat Berks, 78-59, in Wednesday night's North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) South Division contest.

Berks trailed by eight points several times in the opening half, but a jumper by Matt Seip pulled them within one points (23-22) with 5:54 until halftime. Abington went on a 12-1 run over a four minute, thirty second stretch to go up by 12 points with 1:22 left in the period. A layup by Monty Farmer and a pair of free throw by E'drise Hightower cut the deficit to eight points going into the break. Farmer scored the opening points of the second half to pull within six points (35-29), but Abington went on a 13-2 run to build a comfortable double-digit lead that they would maintain the rest of the way.

Hightower finished the game with a team-high 15 points, one shy of his career-high. The junior guard shot 3-of-5 from the field, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, and was 7-for-8 from the foul line. Farmer chipped in 13 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals. Seip added 11 points, nine boards, and three assists. Rene Alexandre finished the game with seven points, while Brandon Wise had six.

Abington had four players score in double figures, led by John Ryan with 15. Jordan Lomax recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Charles Ervin had 11 and Bobby Olsen netted 10.

The Nittany Lions will host SUNY Poly in a NEAC Crossover contest on Saturday, February 2 at 3 p.m.
