Softball sweeps Penn College; run win streak to eight straight

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team continued on its winning ways with a sweep over Penn College in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions won 8-0 in six innings in the opener, followed by a 6-1 triumph in the second game.

The Nittany Lions have won eight straight games to improve to 10-7-1 on the season and 6-0 in NEAC play, while the Wildcats fall to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in league action.

In the opener, Jess Rozick was on top of her game with a season-high 14 strikeouts, which is one shy of her career-high. The junior right-hander did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and finished the day with just two hits allowed. Rozick had a stretch in which 13 of the outs recorded in the game were by strikeout. She recorded at least one strikeout in each inning and had three frames in which she struck out the side. Rozick is now 5-5 on the season with a 1.87 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 63.2 innings of work.

At the plate, Becca Faust stayed red hot, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and a stolen base. Cori Dickinson and Ashley Malek both had a hit and scored three runs. Carley Smith went 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Heather Rissell added one RBI.

In the second game, Hunter Hart got things rolling with a 3-run home run to left center field in the bottom of the second inning. Brianna Smith followed with a solo shot in the bottom of the third. It was the first home run of the season for both Hart and B. Smith. Abby Files and B. Smith finished off the scoring with back-to-back RBI singles in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Val Miller was strong in the pitcher's circle, working out of any trouble she got in throughout the game. The Wildcats opened up the game with two hits to start the first inning, but Miller the first out on a sacrifice bunt and left the runners stranded in scoring position with a pair of ground outs. Miller fielded all three outs with comebackers in the top of the third. The first two runners got on in the third inning, but Miller had a pair of strikeouts and force out at third to escape the inning.

The Wildcats pieced together three straight hits and scored a run in the top of the seventh. With runners on second and third and no outs, Miller forced a fly out to left, ground out to third and ground out to second to end the game.

Miller scattered eight hits and allowed one run, while striking out two batters and walking just one.

Hart finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while B. Smith went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Wilson College for a NEAC doubleheader on Wednesday, April 11 at 3 p.m.
