Softball sweeps Wilson in a pair of thrillers

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - The Penn State Berks softball team broke a scoreless tie late in a 2-0 win in game one against Wilson College on Wednesday afternoon. The Nittany Lions then earned the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) doubleheader sweep after holding off a seventh inning rally in a 3-1 game two victory.

Berks has now won 10 consecutive games to improve to 12-7-1 on the year and 8-0 in the NEAC, while the Phoenix fall to 6-10 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

In the opener, Jess Rozick and Megan Potter were engaged in quite the pitcher's duel. Potter held the Berks offense in check early, allowing just one base runner via walk over the first 10 batters. Brianna Smith notched the first hit of the game off of Potter with one out in the fourth, but was left stranded. Rozick retired the first 11 batters that she faced before Raechelle Hilbish broke up the no-hitter with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, Carley Smith reached base on an error and Heather Rissell had an infield single to put runners on first and second with one out. Rozick moved both the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Hunter Hart delivered a two-out double to left centerfield to score Smith and Rissell, giving Berks a 2-0 edge.

The Phoenix threatened with two runners on and one out in the bottom of the fifth, but Rozick worked out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts. B. Smith had a leadoff double in the sixth, but Potter left her stranded at third base to keep the score at 2-0 in Berks' favor. Both teams went down in order to head into the bottom of the seventh inning and the Phoenix with their last chance to tie the game. Rozick struck out the first batter of the inning, but Ashley Horn followed with a single to put the game-tying run at the plate. The next batter roped a line drive that to first, that B. Smith snagged out of the air and was able to beat Horn back to first base to record the game ending double play.

Rozick finished the contest with three hits and nine strikeouts to notch her sixth win and third shutout of the season. Potter scattered four hits and allowed two runs (one earned), while striking out six batters.

In the second game, Berks methodically jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first four innings of the game. Ashley Malek had an RBI single to score B. Smith in the first inning and pitcher Val Miller helped her own cause with an RBI double in the second to score Hart, who reached on a triple. Cori Dickinson capped off the scoring with an RBI single to left to score B. Smith from third.

Miller only allowed one base runner to reach second base over the first five innings of the game. The Phoenix put together a rally in the sixth inning with a pair of two-out singles, followed by a Berks error to make it 3-1. The following batter singled to load up the bases, but Miller got out of the jam with a strikeout. In the bottom of the seventh, Miller got a strikeout and a ground out back to her for two quick outs before the next two batters reach with singles through the infield. Rozick came on in relief with a strikeout to seal the game and earn her first save of the season.

Miller scattered nine hits and allowed one unearned run, while striking out a career-high six batters in 6.2 innings of work. Her counterpart in the pitcher's circle, Daphne Buzard, allowed three runs on 10 hits in 6.0 innings pitched.

C. Smith finished the contest 3-for-4, while BECCA FAUST had a 2-for-4 showing. Miller also went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI, and one run scored, while Hart was 1-for-3 with two runs scored and a walk.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn State Abington in a NEAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 at 1 p.m. The softball squad will team up with the baseball and tennis programs to host their annual Spring Pink Game fundraiser, with all proceeds benefiting the Breast Cancer Support Services of Berks County.
