Women's tennis tops Bryn Athyn in NEAC opener

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks women's tennis team turned in a stellar performance in its first match in nearly a month, picking up an 8-1 victory over Bryn Athyn College in the Nittany Lions North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) opener on Saturday afternoon at Gring's Mill Tennis Courts.

The Nittany Lions improve to 3-5 overall and 1-0 in the NEAC, while Bryn Athyn drops to 0-4 on the year and 0-2 in the conference.

Caroline Bashore and Laura Youwakim topped Morgan Phillips and Marie Daum, 8-4, in the No. 1 doubles bout. The No. 2 doubles team of Alyssa Miller and Violet Tran and the No. 3 tandem of Deismy Jimenez and Lucrezia Pulcini earned 8-0 victories to give Berks a sweep of doubles play.

Miller picked up a point at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Phillips. Youwakim (No. 3) and Tran (No. 4) both won their singles bouts by a 6-1, 6-1 margin, while Pulcini (No.5) swept 6-0, 6-0. Tessa Caltagirone grabbed the final point for the Nittany Lions with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 6.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Lancaster Bible College for a NEAC tilt on Wednesday, April 11 at 3 p.m. The match will be played at the Hempfield Rec Center in Landisville.
