Softball stays hot with sweep of Keuka

READING, PA - The Penn State Berks softball teams had a pair of superb pitching performances and the offense banged out 20 hits - eight for extra bases - en route to a sweep of Keuka College in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Hintz Athletic Field. The Nittany Lions took the opener by a score of 7-1, followed by a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.

Berks improves to 8-7-1 overall and 4-0 in NEAC play, while the Wolves fall to 1-7 on the season and 0-2 in the league.

Jess Rozick sat down the first 14 batters she faced in order until an infield single broke up the no-hit bid with two outs in the fifth inning. Following that hit, the Wolves pieced together back-to-back hits to drive in a run, but the rally was cut short when Hunter Hart tossed out a base runner trying to go from first to third on the RBI single. Rozick's final line for the game was five hits allowed and one earned, while striking out 10 batters and not issuing any walks. Rozick has now won three straight contests in the pitcher's circle and lowered her ERA to 2.06. She raised her strikeout total to 57 on the season, which leads the NEAC.

Ashley Malek went 3-for-4 at the plate with all three of her hits going for doubles, which ties the single-game school record. Malek also scored twice in the opening game. Becca Faust finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base, while Hart went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in. Carley Smith and Rozick both had a hit and scored a run.

In the second game, SOPHIA CINTI got the Nittany Lions on the board early with a solo home run in the bottom of the first. It was the first homer of the season for the freshman outfielder.

Brianna Smith kept Keuka off the scoreboard in the top of the second when she fielded a sharply hit grounder at first and fired home to get the runner trying to score from third. The Wolves were able to even the game at 1-all in the top of the third with a double by Mickenzie Palmer to score Jessie Hammers from first base in the third inning.

Berks answered right back in the bottom half of the third with three runs. Cinti and Cori Dickinson drew walks and both came around to score on a double by Malek to right center. Faust roped a double down the left field line to bring in Malek to give the home squad a 4-1 lead.

The Nittany Lions tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning when a single to right field by Faust scored pinch runner Lauren Gabel and Malek.

Miller earned the win in game two with a complete-game effort. The junior left-hander scattered five hits and allowed one run, while striking out one and walking one. Miller won her second straight decision and improved to 3-2 on the season. C. Smith was busy at shortstop, finishing with eight assists.

Faust finished the contest 3-for-4 with a career-high three RBI and a double. Malek went 1-for-3 with a double, two RBI, two runs scored, and a stolen base. Cinti went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, while Dickinson had a hit and scored a run.

The Nittany Lions will host Penn College in a NEAC doubleheader on Sunday, April 8 at 12 p.m.
